Collaborative Quilt
Gee Bend Quilters
An Eleanor McCain Quilt
|
To start off the new school year, First and Second Graders are making a collaborative paper quilt. We talked about how quilts can be functional and decorative and works of art! There are so many great Elements of Art to discuss in quilts: color, shape, line, pattern. We looked at the famous quilts of Gee Bend, Alabama and noticed the geometric shapes the quilters used. We compared these to the quilts of Eleanor McCain who was inspired by the Gee Bend quilts. We also looked at the color experiments of Josef Albers. First Graders started by cutting
12" x 12" paper in half and glueing it down in the shape of a cross to 12" x 12" paper, followed by another cross half the size. Second Graders did the same but cut their original paper into quarters (more math!!) and glueing their pieces into a tic-tac-toe pattern. Next week we will be adding smaller details. All the finished squares will be going up to create an enormous work of art!! |
