Egyptian Funerary Masks
To connect with their Social Studies curriculum, 6th Graders created Egyptian Funerary Masks in Art. We looked at Egyptian artwork and discussed how it remained essentially the same for over 3,000 years! This is truly amazing considering how many styles of art our culture has seen in just the past 100 years. Gold was a favorite medium that the Egyptians used. When Howard Carter discovered King Tut’s tomb, he was dazzled by all the gold artwork it contained. The students used gold-tinted, heavy gauge aluminum to create a repoussé. They learned simple metal working techniques to create some areas in relief and colored others with Sharpies.
