Kreepy Dolls
Two summers ago while visiting the Contemporary Craft Center in Pittsburgh, I met the resident artist, Daniel Baxter, who was busily creating his “Kreepy Dolls”. These were unique, hand-sewn, one-of-a-kind creations along the lines of the popular Ugly Dolls. I instantly knew I wanted to bring this idea to ICS and so quizzed him about his process. Since I often do an embroidery unit with Third Graders, this seemed the perfect fit. Each student designed their own Kreepy Doll, embroidered details, sewed together, and stuffed. Some took to it easily, while others struggled with the sewing. But they all persevered to create these charming works of fiber art.
