Relief Printing
Seventh and Eighth Graders spent the first marking period creating relief prints.
Relief Printing is a printmaking technique in which an image is printed from a raised surface, usually by cutting away non-image material. The students watched a video demonstrating the process and read a Scholastic Art article to learn more about the history of printmaking. In our class, the students first chose a reference image and drew it to the size of our linoleum block. Then, they carefully carved away the negative spaces with linoleum cutters. Choosing from many colors of inks and paper, they created beautiful combinations. Finally, they signed their edition of prints with a formal inscription including a title, the number of their print out of the overall number of prints they created and their signature.
