Scarecrows and Pumpkins
In these autumnal landscapes, First and Second Graders first tried to create the illusion of form by adding highlights and shadows to their 2-dimensional pumpkin drawings. Next, we learned how scarecrows are created by farmers to protect their crops, so to protect our pumpkins, we cut scraps of fabric to make clothing for our popsicle stick scarecrows. After discussing the different genres of still life and landscape paintings, we reviewed and mixed colors to paint our backgrounds. Finally, we put them all together: first discussing how artists create depth/space in a landscape by having small things in the background, medium things in the middle ground and large things in the foreground.
